Summer 2010: Top Destinations for the Retired Traveller

According to a survey for Help the Aged by Intune, most over 60s prefer visiting Cyprus, Spain and Italy to holidaying in the UK, with 80% taking at least two foreign trips a year. Here’s a rundown of what’s on offer from these top destinations for the retired traveller, just to whet the appetite, followed by a suggestion on how regular trips to these dream destinations might be funded without eating into precious savings…

Cyprus: Beautiful beaches; captivating culture; historical hotspots and endless walking country all form part of this popular destination which is around four hours away by air.

Italy: Total diversity; smartcity breaks and magnificent coastal retreats; endless Tuscan landscapes and the wondrous lakes: it’s no wonder Italy is fast becoming the destination of choice for the retired traveller.

Spain: Both the weather-blessed Spanish islands and the coastal mainland resorts have long been popular with UK holidaymakers and are easily accessible from the UK. Steering away from the major tourist areas, a wide selection of quieter vicinities bring jaw dropping surroundings and warm, relaxing evenings.

How to Get Away on that Getaway

Want to get away more often and make the most of your free time now you are retired? If eating into any savings you may have doesn’t appeal, or your everyday retirement income doesn’t suffice, there could be an alternative solution.

If you are a homeowner aged 55 or over, why not make something of the fact that you have built up value in your home over the years? It could be possible to release some of that value, tax free, via a lifetime mortgage or home reversion plan, both forms of ‘equity release’ that are safe thanks to the Safe Home Income Plan (SHIP) guarantee. You stay in your home and will never owe more than its value, and you have the benefit of extra cash to spend on whatever you like, including holidays.

Providing you take independent financial advice from an Financial Services Authority (FSA) regulated equity release specialist adviser to ensure releasing the cash is right for you, you could be a step closer to funding those dream holidays to Cyprus, Italy or Spain, or indeed anywhere else in the world that may take your fancy!

Equity release may involve a lifetime mortgage or home reversion plan. To understand the features and risks, please ask for a personalised illustration.
